Goddess of magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs, dogs, crossroads, keys, entrance-ways, ghosts, necromancy and sorcery. Her parents were Perses (titan of destruction) and Asteria (titan-goddess of fallen stars and divination), due to her parentage she’s seen as the goddess of the night and Moon. One of her most popular depiction is that of a woman who’s holding two torches (or lanterns) who are believed to protect against evil spirits, that’s why they were located on the gates of most of large cities in ancient Greece. She is associated with the spiritual underworld, commonly passing through and interacting with the dead. There are quite a few accounts that claim she was the one who witnessed the abduction of Persephone. She is Persephone’s companion and consort during her stay in the Underworld. Hades is very grateful to her for befriending his beloved wife, Persephone, and thus Hecate is free to come and go from the Underworld as she sees fit. She is sometimes depicted as a three-headed goddess which represents the crossroads, as it is believed that Hecate can see in all three directions (Past, Present and Future). Hecate has several animal companions, or familiars if you will. Each one of her familiars has a shapeshifting story; the black dog that assists Hecate on her travels was once the Trojan queen who leapt into the see after the fall of Troy. Domestic cat that is often seen by Hecate’s side was once a midwife named Galanthis. Hecate is a protector of those who are shunned, and oppressed, she appreciates those who are less “conventional”, like her. She is invoked during readings that concern future events as she is an oracle. She is largely worshiped among today’s Pagans and Wiccans, 30th of November is a day that is dedicated solely to her. If you wish to honor her, you can do so by adopting a dog and caring for it with love and respect, volunteering at a shelter, you can take care or run-down or neglected places. She is considered a Dark Mother by many witches and Pagans, and she is known for her deep caring, acceptance, kindness and protection that she offers. She’s also the goddess of the new beginnings.

Hecate’s energy is magnificent for journeys within, her torches light the way and offer protection in the darkest of corners, may that be on the road, or in one’s soul. She is a great companion for soul-digging, and soul-searching, especially if you have in mind to battle (and defeat) some of your personal demons. If you’re a witch, attunement into her energy is priceless for all nocturnal work, for Tarot readings, for spells and Rituals done on the Black Moon and for discovering inner and hidden truths. If you’re struggling with loneliness, or you need change (a new beginning), if you’re struggling with rejection and loneliness; or if you simply wish to take your personal powers on a next level – I advise working with her energy and tuning in to her J
